Tamanu Oil comes from the Tamanu Tree which grows on the tropical islands of Polynesia and Melanesia and Vanuatu (formerly the New Hebrides). It also grows in countries such as Guam, Hawaii, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. These trees produce twice a year a fruit that is of a light green color, it is actually a nut kernel, and the oil will be extracted from the kernels, similiar to the apricot kernel oil. Before the fruit grows you can see clusters of white, fragrant blooms.
Like with many other products there can be big differences in the quality of the Tamanu oil. Basically you “will get what you pay for”.
The nut kernel needs to be cured for 6-8 weeks before the oil can be extracted. The nut gets very sticky and produces a dark, thick and rich oil. It takes four mature trees to produce the nuts that create the amount of 20 liter oil. It speaks for itself that such an oil cannot be inexpensive…
Why is Tamanu Oil so Beneficial?
Tamanu oil has the unique ability to stimulate the growth of healthy new skin tissue. This process is referred to scientifically as “cicatrisation” and scientific studies clearly establish that Tamanu Oil is a significant healing agent.
If you should find Tamanu Oil that contains sign of deposits, deep dark green color and strong smell then you know that this is not high quality oil and it won’t be very beneficial to your skin. Even when it is being said that this would be “natural” it is utterly untrue.
Pure Tamanu oil is of a dark green color and has a strong aroma but won’t contain any deposits.

The natural anti-inflammatory qualities of the oil also produce significant pain-relieving properties (due in part to the presence of Phenyl Coumarin Calophyllolide and various xanthones in the oil). It is this anti-inflammatory quality that is primarily responsible for the reduction of general swelling, rashes, sores, and abrasions.
