The home made vapor rub is a healthy alternative to the “Vicks” vapor rub that we all know, and that we probably had all used when we were sick. Vicks is commonly used for coughs and respiratory diseases, and you can find it in every drug store.
The Question is: How Healthy is Vicks Really?
Vicks contains ingredients that are not so healthy for the body especially for babies and children under the age of 2. It might be ok for adults but not for toddlers and babies.
Vicks contains some ingredients which increase mucus and inflammation and makes breathing harder. It sounds weird because it supposed to do the opposite. This is according to Dr. Bruce Rubin from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine from an article on News Medical from 2009. Even proctor & Gamble, the producer of Vicks, stats that it is safe for infants, Dr. Robin found out about the risks when a 18-month-old child developed severe respiratory distress after it was put directly under its nose.
This happens because a young child’s airway is much narrower than the one of an adult. So an increased mucus production and inflammation affects them more and is making breathing harder and can lead to upper-respiratory problems. Vicks also contains petrolatum and turpentine oil as inactive ingredients, both of them are critical ingredients for a human product.
We thought it is helpful to know how to make your own vapor rub. You know for sure that all ingredients are harmless and beneficial. Especially if you have a sick baby or toddler.
If you are making the vapor rub for a child, always dilute by adding a higher ration of olive or coconut oil and a lower ratio of essential oil, and use as little as needed.Use the rub only on the child’s chest and never under or on the nose.
Ingredients for the Home made Vapor Rub
10-15 drops of essential oil for scent (eucalyptus, peppermint, rosemary, lavender, any combination, etc.)
-1/2 cup of coconut oil (neutral) or cold pressed olive oil
-1-2 tablespoons of beeswax pastilles, candelilla wax or palm shortening (it can be made without it, but it won’t be as thick.)
– Melt 1-2 tablespoons of beeswax pastilles using the double boiler method (place them in a bowl which is placed in a pot with water that will be brought to a brisk boil, – Then reduce heat, and see how the wax is melting).
When wax is melted stir in ½ cup of olive oil or coconut oil along with the essential oils you’ve chosen to use.
– Mix it all well together then pour it into a jar that has a tight fitting lid. Let infuse for 24 hours.
Where Can you Get the Ingredients?
All ingredients are available in good quality health stores or online on organiclifenow.com and similiar websites.
Using olive oil makes a liquid rub, using the wax yields a “solid” rub.
If you’re making this for a small child, half the recipe.
Always dilute the essential oils.
You can get beeswax pastilles and candelilla at many health food stores, or order it online.
If you want the vapor rub thicker add more wax, if it should be thinner add less. You can experiment with the amount of essential oils as well.
Use a cosmetic spoon to get it out of the jar. If you use the fingers the rub will not last that long, this is a good tip for any cream or salve you are using.
