Folic acid is now allowed to add at a level no higher than 0.7 milligrams per pound of corn-masa flour, similar to present requirements for other grains, according to the new rule published in the Federal Register. Masa is sometimes called “corn masa flour” or “masa harina” and is a traditional type of flour used to make tamales, tortillas and many other Mexican favorites. Masa harina means “dough flour” in Spanish, because it’s made from dried masa.
